[ Introduction: leader picks child to knock on bin, everyone calls 'come out Stinky!', Stinky comes out singing his intro tune ]
STINKY: Hello little monkeys!
LEADER: Hello Stinky! How are you?
STINKY: Hello Mr Dave. Oh, I'm so excited! I'm learning to be an octopus.
STINKY: [Confused] An optopus?
STINKY: No, wait. An ... optimist.
LEADER: An optimist?
STINKY: No, wait. Uhmm.. you know ... an eye doctor.
LEADER: Oh, I see!
STINKY: Yes! I need to test your eyes, OK Mr Dave?
LEADER: Oh, sure...
STINKY: OK, I'll show you some letters, and you tell me what they are. Ready?
LEADER: OK.
STINKY: [Flashes chart with small letters]. Did you see it?
LEADER: No ... it was too small... it was too fast...
STINKY: [concerned, interrupting] A-ha! You need my help Mr Dave. This is a very bad case. But it's OK, I can help you see better.
LEADER: [Hesitant] OK Stinky, sure.
STINKY: OK. Look carefully into my eyes, and don't move!
LEADER: OK.
STINKY: OK, here I go... [Throat clearing sounds, then spit on leader's eye/face]
LEADER: [Disgusted, covering his eye] Stinky!
STINKY: Here, have a tissue -- it's free!
LEADER: That's yuck! [Wipes eye]
STINKY: Can you see any better now?
LEADER: No!
STINKY: Are you sure?
LEADER: Yes. Spitting is not a normal way of helping people!
STINKY: Oh, but I read it in the Bible. Jesus helped a blind man see by spitting and making some mud!
LEADER: Oh Stinky, I think you were reading the story in John chapter 9. Let's read it together again to see what it says.
[ Slide: 'Jesus heals the blind man', progress via reading. ]
[ As Jesus went along, he saw a man blind from birth. ]
[ ^2^ His disciples asked him, \"Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?\" ]
[ ^3^ \"Neither this man nor his parents sinned,\" said Jesus, \"but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. ]
[ ^4^ As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. ]
[ ^5^ While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.\" ]
[ ^6^ After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man\'s eyes. ]
[ ^7^ \"Go,\" he told him, \"wash in the Pool of Siloam\" (this word means \"Sent\"). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. ]
LEADER: Stinky, this happened so people could see the works of God. It wasn't the spit that healed the blind man. It was God.
STINKY: God healed the blind man?
LEADER: Yes. See, normally what happened back then, if you were born blind you would stay blind your whole life.
STINKY: Oh no...
LEADER: But God interrupts the normal and heals this man. I will just read the next bit of the story and listen how no one expected the blind man to see. No one expected God to interrupt the normal.
[ ^8^ His neighbours and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, \"Isn\'t this the same man who used to sit and beg?\" ^9^ Some claimed that he was. Others said, \"No, he only looks like him.\" But he himself insisted, \"I am the man.\" ^10^ \"How then were your eyes opened?\" they asked. ^11^ He replied, \"The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.\" ^12^ \"Where is this man?\" they asked him. \"I don\'t know,\" he said. (John 9:1-12 NIV) ]
STINKY: But Mr Dave, who healed the blind man -- Jesus or God?
LEADER: Yes, you are right Stinky -- and that is the point.
STINKY: Oh yes, the point... Where is the point? I don't see it. [Looks around]
LEADER: Jesus was showing he was God. God was interrupting the normal by becoming man. God was interrupting the normal through Jesus. Jesus showed he was God interrupting the normal when he healed a man who was blind from birth.
STINKY: Oh, I see!
LEADER: That is good Stinky -- and so did the blind man -- but lots around him couldn't. They tried to explain what was happening in all sorts of other ways, than seeing this was God interrupting the normal.
STINKY: Oh, so what's the Bible Bite for today?
LEADER: Let's see:
