Tags Revelation, Knowledge, God, Pride, Jesus
Key Points We could not know God any other way. Cf Natural Theology, p50
We in our pride might \'search\' for God, but we depend on Him revealing himself (telling us about himself).
Props/Materials
Preparation Ask a child as a volunteer, brief them.
Debrief Good overall. Stretched it out a fair bit, and kids stayed attentive.
They didn't respond to 'Come out Stinky!', even after my intro! They need leading and prompting.
S snuck his head out as he was going out, and kids liked that.

Games: Duck duck goose, stuck in the mud, fruit salad, follow the leader, tangles (in two groups).

[ Introduction: leader picks child to knock on bin, everyone calls 'come out Stinky!', Stinky comes out singing his intro tune ]

STINKY: Ms Tina, today I'd like to meet one of the little monkeys a bit better. Could you please get a volunteer?

[ Leader chooses a child, not too young as it may be a bit scary to be part of the joke. Ask them to sit next to the bin. ]

STINKY: OK! I'll go looking for [child] inside my bin here. I'm sure she'll be here somewhere. If I look hard enough, I'll find her!... I'm not sure [child] is real, I can't find her anywhere here!

[ Leader rolls her eyes, Oh Stinky! etc, asks child to call Stinky ]

STINKY: [S comes out] Oh! There you are! Lucky you called me, otherwise I would have kept looking inside my bin!

STINKY: OK! I'd like to know something about [child]... like, what she likes doing. Let me think... [S looks at child intently, trying to guess]. Ahhh, ok, I think I've got it - you like... eating mud! No? Ok, ok, let me think a bit more... ah! I know, you like drinking putrid smelly slime!

LEADER: Stinky, I don't think it's working. Children, if we want to find out about [child], what should we do? [Children respond asking [child]]. That's right! Stinky, you won't know what she likes unless she tells you!

STINKY: Oh! OK, [child], what do you like doing?

[ Repeat with where she goes to school. S thinks he is really smart and he can guess, but guesses Coolangatta, Wogga Wogga. ]

STINKY: Oh my! What a day, I've learnt that if I want to know someone, I can't do it by myself - they have to tell me about themselves. Miss Tina, I've got a question... How do we know God?

LEADER: What a good question - what do you think kids? [field responses]. Let's see what Robbie the Robot can tell us from the Bible...

[ Show passage slide, ask a child to read it. ]

LEADER: There you go, the Bible says that we can know God because he has told us about Him. In how many ways did God speak to us? [many!] And how many times? [many!] And how has he spoken to us now? [Jesus]

LEADER: Can anyone remember what a Bible Bite is? Jesus said that the Bible is a bit like bread - we need to feed on the Bible so we grow spiritually. A Bible Bite is a lesson that we learn today from the Bible. Let's see what our Bible Bite is for today.

[ Show Bible Bite slide on laptop, ask a child to read it. ]

LEADER: Knowing God is a bit like getting to know [child]. We can know [child] because she told us about herself. We can know God because He has told us about Him.

STINKY: Oh! So, if God doesn't tell us about Himself, then we don't have a chance of knowing Him?!

LEADER: That's right. Like you with [child], it wouldn't matter how hard we tried to look for God, or find out about Him, if He hadn't revealed Himself to us. But the good news is that He has told us about Himself. Children, do you know how He has done that? [kids respond Bible and Jesus].

STINKY: That's amazing!

LEADER: That's right, and next week we'll learn more about that. Now Stinky, do you think you can remember the Bible Bite?

STINKY: Arrrgh... let me see... We can know God, because He made a TV show about Him?...

LEADER: Oh Stinky! Children who can help Stinky? [ask a child] OK, let's say the Bible Bite together.

[ Read Bible Bite ]

STINKY: Wow - I can't wait until next week. I better go now. Thank you for teaching us about God Miss Tina. See you later little monkeys!

[ Stinky goes back in. Shut lid, wheel Stinky out. ]
