What are they?

How do we read them?

Why read them? A gift from a loving and wise Father. He is full of love and loyalty. He is kind and true. Worth listening to!

[ Introduction: leader picks child to knock on bin, everyone calls 'come out Stinky!', Stinky comes out singing his intro tune ]

STINKY: Hello little monkeys!

LEADER: Hello Stinky! What have you been up to?

STINKY: Oh, I've got a new Twitter account.

LEADER: Oh, Twitter: that's the social network where you can post short messages on the internet that everyone can see.

STINKY: Yeah. I'm trying to think of smart things to say, but I only have 280 characters.

LEADER: Yeah, that's their rule. You have to say things in a short and catchy sentence.

STINKY: Hmm. OK, OK, how about this: 'My bin is like the Bermuda triangle: stuff goes in and is never seen again'.

LEADER: Hmm...

STINKY: OK, OK, I got another one: 'Doing nothing is hard work. You never know when you\'re done.'

LEADER: Hmm...

STINKY: OK, OK, one more: 'Does the light in the fridge really go off when we close the door? How can we be so sure?'

LEADER: Hmm, I don't think they're smart things to tell everyone. Maybe you should read some good Twitter accounts first.

STINKY: Who is worth following in Twitter?

LEADER: You have to find someone who is... Kind: who wants to help us in a loving way. Wise: who knows how the world works and will tell you true things. And speaks in short and catchy sentences. That's hard to find, there's a lot of rubbish on Twitter.

STINKY: Hmm, sounds like finding a golden necklace in a rubbish heap. Hey Mr Dave, I have a question. Does God have a Twitter account?

LEADER: Ha! You know, God has a book in the Bible that speaks loving wisdom in short and catchy sentences.

STINKY: Really? Where is it?

LEADER: Kids, do you know what I'm thinking about?

[ Get responses ]

LEADER: Yes! The book of Proverbs. It's in the middle of the Bible, and it's really precious.

STINKY: Oh, what is it about?

LEADER: Lots of things! But mainly, it's about wisdom.

STINKY: What's wisdom?

LEADER: It's knowing how to live well in God's world. Proverbs talks about all kinds of things that happen to us: speaking, arguments, choices, work, friends -- and much more!

STINKY: That sounds great! I want to learn more. Can we learn some Proverbs this year? The little monkeys are still learning lots about how to live well in God's world. You want to learn Proverbs little Monkeys?

[ Accept responses ]

LEADER: Sure!

STINKY: OK, OK, let's get started! How do we start being wise, eh?

LEADER: Ah, there's a Proverb about that, in the first page... Let's read the Bible:

[ Slide (verse): Respect and obey the Lord! This is the beginning of knowledge. Only a fool rejects wisdom and good advice. Proverbs 1:7 ]

STINKY: Wow, that's less than 280 characters!

LEADER: Yes, See? We start being wise when we respect and obey God.

STINKY: Why is that?

LEADER: Because this is His world we live in. He knows the truth about how to live in it, he is kind to us, and He has spoken true words of wisdom...

STINKY: Oh, it still sounds hard. I wish I had someone to copy...

LEADER: Well, we can all copy Jesus. He respected and obeyed his Father, and listened to God's wise words. He was very wise. Actually, the Bible says Jesus is God's wisdom.

STINKY: That sounds good!

LEADER: Yes! Let's see our Bible Bite:

[ Slide: Bible Bite: Proverbs are God's true and kind words about living well in His world. ]

LEADER: Let's read it together now.

[ Everyone reads. ]

LEADER: OK Stinky, it's your turn now.

STINKY: Ah... Problems are growing well and smelly in Stinky's fridge.

LEADER: Oh, Stinky! Come kids, we better help him, let's read it together again.

[ Read again. ]

STINKY: Oh, I better go now. Bye bye little monkeys!
