Debrief | 14-Apr-06 (Easter Friday) - Went well overall, a bit flat in the middle, but OK. |
[ Leader introduces segment, says she has lots of buns to give to kids, and S is helper, she asked him to bring the buns, and look after them. While she does this, S is heard (still in bin) munching away... A child is selected to knock on bin. ]
STINKY: Who is it?
Kids: Come out Stinky!
[ S comes out still munching on half a bun. ]
STINKY: Oh! It's the little monkeys! I better say hello - hello little monkeys!
Kids: Hello Stinky...
LEADER: Hello Stinky. Where are the buns for the kids?
STINKY: Oh... Ahh... [Looks at his half bun]... which buns? [To kids] Uh-oh...
LEADER: The buns for the kids that I gave you to look after, remember?
STINKY: Oh... Those buns... [Again to kids] Uh-oooh... Ah, let me go and get them...
[ S goes down, brings back up the same half bun in a baking tray. ]
LEADER: That's just half a bun - the one you were eating. Where are all the other buns?
STINKY: Oh... Ahh... I put them in a very special place, so I wouldn't loose them.... My tummy!
LEADER: This is not good Stinky! I promised the kids the buns. And I asked you to keep them and bring them with you. What are we going to do now?
STINKY: Oh, I know - I've got something else we can give the kids, just a tick... [goes down and brings back a rotten, half carrot].
LEADER: Stinky! This is not good enough! This won't be enough, and it's rotten, and it's not as nice as a bun. Someone will have to go back to the kitchen and bring some more. Who do you think that should be?
LEADER: Kids, who do you think should go back to the kitchen? [Stinky!] Yes, I'm sad about this, but this is your punishment for being so unkind.
STINKY: Oh, I guess it's fair enough that I should go - it's my fault, I'm guilty, I ate the buns, I was greedy. But I don't want to go, and I can't cook, and the shops are closed, and I don't have any money to buy any, and I don't want to miss out on being with you and the little monkeys! Ohh, I just can't get myself out of trouble. Oh, I'm really stuck now.
[ Someone at the back says 'I'll go instead of you, Stinky', comes to the front. ]
STINKY: You'll go instead of me? Really? You don't deserve to go - it's my punishment, because I'm guilty - I was greedy - not you!
LEADER: I know that. But I want to be a good friend to you Stinky, so even though I don't deserve your punishment, I didn't do anything wrong, I'm going to take your place. I'll be back soon.
STINKY: Oh, I'm so glad that [leader B] took my place, he's such a good friend.\ Hey, Karyn, I have a question... Why do we eat hot cross buns? And why do they have a cross on them?
LEADER: What a good question! What do you think, kids? [kids answer]\ We eat hot cross buns to remember that Jesus died on the cross in our place, to take our punishment that we deserved.\ Let's see what the Bible says about this, let's get Robbie the Robot to find it for us...
[Slide: 1 Peter 3:18, "Christ died once for our sins. An innocent person died for those who are guilty. Christ did this to bring you to God" (CEV).\ Leader asks child to read.]
STINKY: Who are the 'guilty'?
LEADER: What do you think kids?... Guilty people have done something wrong; and we've all done something wrong.
STINKY: Wow. What have we all done that's wrong? Why are we guilty?
LEADER: We've all said 'no' to God, and try to live life our way. We deserve to be punished by God.
STINKY: Can't we give God something to make Him happy?
LEADER: No Stinky, we can't pay our way out of our guilt, just like you couldn't pay our way out of trouble by offering us a bit of carrot.
STINKY: Wow... We're really stuck. What will God do about this?
LEADER: Jesus, who was innocent and did nothing wrong, died instead of us, who are guilty. He did this so we could be God's friends.
STINKY: That's amazing! So Jesus died for us, even though he didn't deserve to, to take our punishment! Did he die in your place, Karyn?
LEADER: Yes, Stinky.
STINKY: And did he die in the place of the little boys and girls?
LEADER: Well, if they put their trust in Jesus, yes.
STINKY: Oh... I get it! He took our place to pay the penalty we couldn't afford to pay, just like [leader B] took my place and did what I couldn't do in the kitchen.
LEADER: Yes Stinky, Jesus died instead of us to bring us to God - that's why we eat hot cross buns, to remind us of this amazing thing he's done for us. So let's see what the Bible Bite for this week is...
[ Slide: Bible Bite, "Jesus died in our place to bring us to God." ]
[Leader asks child to read it, then asks S to say it but he gets it wrong (e.g. "I ate a bun instead of a carrot, to bring you an empty tray"), then all kids say it together.\ Then Leader B comes back with buns, gives one to each child.]
STINKY: Oh, that's great. Thanks for taking my place, [leader B], and thank you Karyn for teaching me that Jesus died in our place to bring us to God. I better go now - see you later little monkeys!
