Props/Materials toothbrushes, one per child

Leader: Hello kids. We're having a special day today: a thanksgiving day. We give thanks to God for all the good things he gives us. I told Stinky about it so he could join us.

[ Introduction: leader picks child to knock on bin, everyone calls 'come out Stinky!', Stinky comes out singing his intro tune ]

Stinky: Hello everybody!

Leader: Hello Stinky. I'm glad you could join us for our special day at church today.

Stinky: Yes! I went shopping yesterday, I think I've got enough for all my little friends.

Leader: (Confused) \ Oh. Enough what?

Stinky: (Through gritted teeth, not wanting to give away surprise)\ You know... brushes.

Leader: Brushes? That sounds strange...

Stinky: Well, this special day sounded pretty strange to me!

Leader: Really?

Stinky: Yes! I've never been to a brush giving day...

Leader: Oh, Stinky, maybe you heard me wrong. We're having a thanks giving day today - not a brush giving day.

Stinky: Oh.... so... you don't give brushes to each other?

Leader: No, we give thanks to God for all His blessings to us in the last year.

Stinky: Well this is embarrassing! What am I going to do with all these toothbrushes?! [Brings up big bunch of toothbrushes]

Leader: Can you use them?

Stinky: No, because I don't have many teeth. Look! [Opens moth to audience]

Leader: Oh, that's why your breath smells so special...

Stinky: That's what my mummy told me...

Leader: Stinky, I've got an idea. I think these toothbrushes can help us give thanks to God.

Stinky: How?

Leader: Kids, we usually brush our teeth every night, before we get to bed, right? At the end of the day, I can feel sad, or grumpy, or envious. That's a great time to remember God's blessings to us in that day.

Stinky: But what about the toothbrushes?

Leader: Let's call these Stinky's special thanksgiving toothbrushes!

Stinky: Oh that sounds good!

Leader: OK Kids, my helper is going to come and give you Stinky's toothbrush. (Helper hands out one toothbrush per child)

Stinky: Yes, it's a gift from me!

Leader: So, we brush our teeth in three steps. First, we brush the outside. Then, we brush the tops and bottoms. And then, we brush the inside.

Stinky: OK, but how do we give thanks?

Leader: Well, for each step, we think of one good gift from God, and we say thank you to Him!

Stinky: Oh, can we practice together please?

Leader: Yes! Kids get ready, we're going to pretend to brush our teeth in three steps. For each step, we're going to give thanks for one thing, so start thinking aboug God's gifts to us.

Stinky: It's a bit strange brushing our teeth in church!

Leader: Yes, but it's not strange to say thank you to God. We should do it every day!

Stinky: Yes! Can we start?

Leader: OK, step one is the outside of our teeth. Stinky, what's one thing you're thankful for?

Stinky: Ehh... My bin! It keeps me warm, and dry, and... smelly!

Leader: Great! Kids, what is something you're thankful for?

[ Get response from one child. ]

Leader: Thank you! Step two is the tops and bottoms. Stinky?

Stinky: Eh... I'm thankful for Jesus!

Leader: Good one! Kids?

[ Get response from one child. ]

Leader: Thank you. Step three is the inside. Stinky!

Stinky: I'm thankful for you Miss Pat, because you help me learn!

Leader: Wow! Kids?

[ Get response from one child. ]

Leader: Well done everyone! I want you to make it a habit. Every night, when you get ready for bed, get Stinky's special toothbrush, and thank God for three good things. The grown ups can do this too!

Stinky: Miss Pat! I don't have enough toothbrushes for the grown ups...

Leader: That's OK, only the kids get your special toothbrushes.

Stinky: Oh. Well, thank you for inviting me to your special thanksgiving day!

Leader: Thank you for giving us the toothbrushes Stinky!

Stinky: I better go now. Happy brushing kids! Bye!
