[ Introduction: leader picks child to knock on bin, everyone calls 'come out Stinky!', Stinky comes out singing his intro tune ]

STINKY: Hello little monkeys!

LEADER: Hello Stinky! Hey I wanted to show you something... [pulls out car/toy]

STINKY: Wow, that's a cool toy! Can you show me what it does?

LEADER: Well, there's a problem. It's dead.

STINKY: Dead?

LEADER: Yep, no batteries. And it's broken too! It can't do anything. It's like it's dead.

STINKY: Oh, that's a shame. I know what you can do! You should wait until the toy fixes itself.

LEADER: Really? [pause, both stare at toy] Stinky, dead things can't make themselves alive. They're helpless. Unless someone helps them, they can't do anything.

STINKY: Oh... I guess you should throw it away then!

LEADER: Well, I could. It's not working anymore. It's broken. But I love this toy.

STINKY: You love it? Even though it's broken and dead? You must love it so much...

LEADER: Yes. I'm going to fix it and bring it back to life. There are games I want to play with this toy. [screwdriver fiddle, puts batteries in, turns it on]

STINKY: Wow! Look, it's working now. Isn't it a clever toy...

LEADER: What do you mean?

STINKY: The toy! It must be a smart toy to come alive like that.

LEADER: The toy didn't do anything -- I did.

STINKY: But look at it moving around, making sounds. Oh! That reminds me of a friend of mine, Mr Nathan. He told me he was very good and clever, because he believed in Jesus.

LEADER: Hmm, do you think that makes sense Stinky? [Gets toy, turns off]

STINKY: I guess so... he did the right thing to believe in Jesus. That's good, isn't it?

LEADER: What do you think kids? Does it make sense to talk like that?

STINKY: Well, what does the Bible say?

LEADER: Ah, let's have a look.

[Slide (verse): But God was merciful! We were dead because of our sins, but God loved us so much that he made us alive with Christ, and God's wonderful kindness is what saves you.\ Ephesians 2:4-5]

LEADER: Ah, listen to this... [read out]

STINKY: We were dead?

LEADER: Yes, because of our sins, it's like we were dead to God, and in big trouble.

STINKY: Oh no! What can we do to save ourselves?

LEADER: Well, nothing really. Dead people can't do anything. We're helpless. Unless someone helps us, we can't do anything.

STINKY: But what will happen to us?

LEADER: Here's the good news Stinky. God loved us so much! He saved us. He made us alive!

STINKY: So we don't save ourselves -- God does! That is kind! What about my friend, though? Is he good and clever because he believes in Jesus?

LEADER: Well, we only believe in Jesus because God helps us to.\ So we shouldn't brag about how good we are.\ We should talk about how kind God is.

STINKY: Oh... so it's a bit silly to brag, if someone else fixed the problem?

LEADER: Yes! Let's see our Bible Bite:

LEADER: Can you say that Stinky?

STINKY: OK... I shouldn't brag if my batteries are dead.

LEADER: Oh, Stinky! Let's do it all together.

STINKY: Oh, I better go now. Bye bye little monkeys!
